The Ojai Moment with Lisa and Matt: Meet Sergeant Joe Evans
Lisa and Matt talk to Sergeant Joe Evans (just call him Joe) about keeping an eye out for trouble and staying informed through his Ojai City Watch program. To receive email alerts from Joe, send an email to him at OjaiValley.CityWatch@ventura.org.
From one of Joe's recent email alerts:
Holidays are here.
During the coming months we will be spending much time in and out of
shopping centers. This is a good time for each of us to take account of
how aware we are of our surroundings while shopping. We want to always
be in a position that keeps us safe and secure. the biggest thing we
need to remember is that we will not be considered an easy target by
crooks looking to take advantage of our holiday spirit. To that end here
are just a few things for you to consider. These tips come to us from
our friends at Thousand Oaks City Watch.
Holiday Crime Prevention Tips In Parking Lots:
Shop early and leave early to avoid darkness
Park in a high visibility area and check for lighting in case you leave
during hours of darkness
Prior to arriving at the shopping center, lock all your valuables in
the trunk of your vehicle
Ask security to escort you to your vehicle if you feel uncomfortable
Walk briskly, confidently, and directly through the parking lot. Be
cautious of people handing out fliers or asking questions in the parking
area
Do not talk or text message while walking to and from your vehicle—be
aware of your surroundings
Check the area around your car to see that it is safe to enter or exit
Watch for people who may be following you. This can occur inside as
well as outside. If you suspect someone following you, report it to
police or security immediately
