Al Westcott: When the Kingdom Comes

Al Westcott was recently voted an Ojai favorite in the Ojai Valley News 2007 Best Of Ojai Readers' Poll. He usually plays entertaining covers by Johnny Cash, Bob Dylan and the Eagles, while weaving in his own originals. This is a song he wrote and recorded, "When the Kingdom Comes."

"I just finished writing the song and putting the final touches on the CD artwork. It is a bit of a departure for me in that I am not a 'gospel' songwriter but this one just felt right and turned out to have a gospel feel. I did all the parts myself using my in-home recording equipment," says Westcott.

I'm partial to this tune. It sounds like hillbilly gospel.

Women of Ojai

Lisa interviews local photographer, Attasalina Dews, about her recent project, The Women of Ojai calendar. From the recent press release: “STRENGTH IS BEAUTY” - THE WOMEN OF OJAI 2008 CALENDAR
The Ojai Calendar Project continues to support the arts in Ojai. This year, Attasalina Dews presents the Women of Ojai in “Strength is Beauty.” The calendar is a limited edition of 750 copies featuring fine art nude photographs of 12 local women. Pre-sales of the calendar are available online at www.womenofojai.com. Proceeds of calendar and print sales will benefit local artists, art groups and school art programs. The calendar price is $25.

The response to the 2007 Men of Ojai calendar “Liberation” was overwhelmingly positive and the process of creating and distributing the calendar supported many local artists and art related businesses. The Women of Ojai 2008 Calendar has brought on new support in the form of four local sponsors: Color Works Printing, Inc., P3D Marketing & Events, Studio 201 Framing and Valley of Moon Giclees. With their help, this calendar has even greater potential to support local artists and encourage creative freedom in the Ojai Valley. Bob Ballard: Holdin' On

Bob Ballard, one of the owners of Sound & Vision Learning Resource Center in Ojai, has been playing guitar and singing songs for 30 years. Here is one of his originals, "Holdin' On," recorded at Sea Music with Jim Monahan on guitars and Candice Delbo singing backup. Bob and his partner, Joe Cicero, will perform tomorrow, Sunday 9/9, 3PM-7PM at the It’s All Good Bar at 533 Main Street in Ventura. Myridian: Summer of My Mind

Ojai's rock band, Myridian, is back in Ojai this Friday 8/24 at 6pm at the Ojai Athletic Club and again next Friday 8/31 at the Deer Lodge at 9pm. I asked Scott Smith, the band's keyboardist, what they are looking forward to most with the Deer Lodge gig, and he said, "It's one of the few regular venues for a full rock band in Ojai, so we’re glad to be coming home after being on the road down in San Diego." Myridian recently performed for the troops at Camp Pendleton.

They've always stayed true to their original music, but plan to surprise fans with some familiar sounds next week, "We’ve worked up a few covers for the Rolling Stones, Beatles, and Steely Dan fans, and Lady Sheila, our groovin’ bass goddess will be with us!"

Since summer is just about over, and I would like it to linger on, I thought we should take a listen to the first track on their CD, Prime Myridian, aptly named, "Summer of My Mind."
